Until children enter school,
almost all learning occurs in a one-on-one setting. Why
should that type of interaction suddenly stop when they
begin their formal education?
In the schoolroom it is not realistic to expect a child
to have a personal teacher for an entire day, every day.
It is possible to have one for an hour or more per week.
Time with a personal tutor may help prevent many potential
problems from forming and address any already present.
The most well-prepared children, emotionally and educationally,
are usually the ones who have received lots of one-on-one
attention from their parents before the age of five.
It only makes sense this mode of teaching should continue
into their school years. Even educationally handicapped
children have been known to develop far beyond expectations
from effective tutoring.
The Value of One-to-One Tutoring
Everyone knows how important personal tutoring is for someone
having troubles. It gives new learning options that, understandably,
are unavailable in the classroom:
Freedom
to ask questions
Many students are afraid to ask questions in the classroom
which might help them with their work. They think everyone
else understands the material and their own questions
will appear "dumb". One-to-one tutoring eliminates
the risk of embarassment by answering questions and also
teaching that all questions are "smart" because
they advance learning.
Instant
feedback on performance
A student having trouble understanding the work needs
reassurance assignments are being done correctly. Encouragement
leads
to more and better effort and learning success leads to
an improved self-image.
Freedom
to work at his or her own speed
One-to-one tutoring offers freedom from the time constraints
of the classroom that can frustrate some students.
Attention
to individual learning needs
A perceptive tutor will know how to break down a schoolwork
assignment into manageable portions so that the student
is successful at each step. It may also be demonstrated
how different learning styles can be used to the best
advantage before learning weaknesses develop.
Attention
to impromptu questions feeds intellectual needs
Everyone ponders and puzzles about the world around they
live in. Students need the answers to self-generated questions,
this encourages creative thinking and expansion of horizons.
In the classroom there is rarely time to answer these
questions and they should not go unanswered and unexplored.
Avoiding
homework conflicts at the end of a hectic day
Need we say more on this point?!
Assessment
and attention to learning needs before problems arise
Wise parents do not leave the initial development of their
child's reading, writing, and math skills to chance. Children
require one-on-one help to get off to a good start in
these skills. It is not a reflection of the level of their
intelligence or that of their parents if help is needed.

How Our Program Works for YOU
|
Because our Houston tutoring program is not center-based,
it is often the best solution for many busy families.
Lesson times are arranged to fit into busy family schedules.
Time is not wasted with dropping off and picking up
students at a learning center. Participation in extra-curricular
activities can continue and a student receive needed
academic support in their own home.
Familiarity and Consistency
|
In many center-based programs, the tutor may change
from session to session. We understand the benefits
of a consistent relationship between tutor and pupil.
ART provides tutors to match a students individual circumstances,
then continues to provide the same tutor for the duration
of the program. Not only does the student develop a
good working relationship with the tutor but the parents
also become acquainted.
Tutoring students in familiar surroundings, as opposed
to in a facility, also ensures a "comfort zone"
for the student and eliminates the competitive atmosphere
which can be present when teacher/student ratios are
one-to-two, three or four. ART tutors help students
feel at ease and receptive to learning.
ART tutors do not follow a "set" curriculum
because every student is unique. Each student's educational
program targets what he or she is doing at school and
focuses on particular needs. Using the school's curriculum
as a guideline, tutors may introduce supplementary materials
to
enhance the learning process. This approach prevents
confusing the student. A child may perform at a high
level with a "learning center" curriculum,
but still be failing classes. Following the school's
curriculum allows the student to keep up with studies
and allows the tutors the opportunity to review anything
not understood. Working in tandem with the schools we
believe our students will excel and improve their grades
faster.
At ART we believe when a student's learning goal is
accomplished our mission is complete. You won't be bound
by a long-term contract to continue with our tutoring
service after your goals have been met. We'll be here
for you if you need us again! And if you do, we know
you'll call on us.
